Selling a junk car without a title

A missing title is the most common reason people put off scrapping a car — and usually the easiest to solve. Here's what New York actually requires, and how to find out in one call whether we can buy your vehicle today. Call (718) 702-3135.

What New York requires

New York issues titles for most vehicles from model year 1973 onward. Older vehicles are typically transferred with a registration plus a bill of sale. In every case you need proof that you are the legal owner and a photo ID that matches.

  • Photo ID matching the registered owner
  • Title when the vehicle is 1973 or newer
  • Registration plus bill of sale for pre-1973 vehicles
  • Lien release when a loan was previously recorded

How to get a duplicate title

If the title was lost, the registered owner can request a duplicate from the NY DMV (form MV-902) for a small fee. It arrives by mail, usually within a couple of weeks. If you want to sell sooner, call us first — depending on the vehicle's age and paperwork we may be able to proceed while the duplicate is in process.

Situations we see all the time

Most no-title cases fall into a handful of patterns, and each has a normal path forward.

  • Title lost during a move — request a duplicate (MV-902)
  • Vehicle inherited — estate paperwork or executor letter
  • Car bought but never transferred — seller's signed title or bill of sale chain
  • Loan paid off years ago — lender's lien release letter

What we can't buy

We won't purchase a vehicle when ownership can't be established — for example, a car left on your property by someone else, or a vehicle reported stolen. If that's your situation, call anyway and we'll point you to the right process.

Common questions

Will I get less money without a title?

Sometimes slightly, because processing takes more work on our end. We'll tell you both numbers up front so there are no surprises.

The car is in my late parent's name. Can I sell it?

Usually yes, with estate or executor documentation. Call and describe what paperwork you have and we'll tell you what's still needed.

Do I need keys?

No. Our drivers regularly load locked and keyless vehicles — just mention it when you book.

Ready for cash today?

One call gets you a firm offer and a pickup time — usually the same day.
